Tug of War

Tug of War is one of the fun outdoor games for kids and group games for kids.

You'll need good muscle strength and stamina for this!

It teaches kids the importance of teamwork and also patience!

This activity is great played on sand at the beach or on grass.

Who hasn't played this classic and had loads of fun?

It's been played at family picnics, for gym class, at recess when the kids want a break, and in your neighborhood.

It's a good friendly competition activity that lets you prove how strong you are! Show off those muscles!

Before You Start

6 or more players
Ages: 8 and up
Need rope, rag, sticks


Divide the kids into 2 teams of an equal number of players. The teams should be of equal strength.

Tie a rag in the middle of the rope. The rag will be over a center line on the ground.

If playing on sand, you can draw a line with a stick. If playing on grass, put sticks down to make the center line.

The kids line up behind each other, each team at opposite ends of the rope.

There should be about 3 1/2 feet of space between players in the center of the rope.

Begin by having the kids pick up the rope. Have the strongest member of each team at the end of each side of the rope.

At the shout of "1, 2, 3, go!" the teams pull the rope, trying to get the opposite team's members to cross over the center line.

When one team member crosses the center line, they lose and the opposing team wins.

Or, you can decide if one team drops the rope that the other team wins.

Play as many rounds as you want.

Or, make it the best out of 3 or five rounds.
