Shut the Box
Shut the Box is one of the fun kids math games, addition games for kids and strategy games for kids.
2 - 4 players Ages: 8 and up Need dice, pencil, paper, coins or buttons Begin with each player drawing 9 squares on paper. They then number the squares 1 to 9. Place the coins or buttons in the middle of the table or give each player 9 objects. Each player rolls one die to determine who goes first. The highest number does. If a tie, roll until the tie is broken. Players want to cover up their squares by rolling numbers on 2 dice that add up to numbers 1 to 9. The first player goes by rolling 2 dice. He then takes a coin or button and places that on his board covering the number his dice add up to. Example, he rolls a 6. He can place a coin or button over number 6 if it isn't already covered. Or, he can break the 6 down by covering numbers 1, 2, and 3 if he needs these numbers on his board. He can also cover numbers 1 and 5 or 2 and 4. He must use numbers that add up to the number he rolled. He continues rolling the dice until he can no longer cover numbers. When he can't cover numbers, the next player goes. He then receives penalty points for each number that is uncovered. After players cover 7, 8 and 9, they just roll one die. The winner is the player with the fewest penalty points after a set number of rounds.
